Oak Creek Community Park
A communal gathering place on the Fort Independence Paiute Community Reservation
Building the future we deserve
The Fort Independence Indian Reservation encompasses approximately 550 acres of striking yet formidable desert landscape within California’s Owens Valley. This land, while undeniably beautiful, is characterized by its rugged and arid nature, sculpted by the powerful forces of a high desert environment. Despite its harshness, the land holds a profound cultural and historical significance, having been home to the Paiute people since time immemorial.
As stewards of this land, we knew that we needed more. The Paiute people have long held sacred yearly gatherings of our people; vital for sharing knowledge of game movement, harvesting pine nuts and trading of obsidian and basketry. Our oral history was shared and taught during these communal gatherings and ceremonies. This park is the culmination of a decades long dream being made a reality.
An annual gathering of Paiute people in the Owens Valley.

“We all have a responsibility to help others out. It’s the simple, little things we do that may seem insignificant, but that make a difference.”
